NaPoWriMo2016 #10 ~ THE SLEEPING MUSE

The Sleeping Muse

The child called
cherub
was kept wrapped
in the silks of her day
dainty
delicate
obliging
ignorant

The girl called
lovely
was bartered
as was the custom
for land
for title
yet her purse
was empty

The lady called
fair
did what was called
her duty
birthing an heir and a spare
and a few for trade
from a marriage bed of rape

The woman called
dignified
outlasted the bought
and the sold
what might have been
had she been valued
never a thought
